The agreement means that Denmark will also spend at least 0.7 per cent of GNI on development aid in the next four years. GNI indicates the annual income of a country’s inhabitants.
According to the Ministry of Development, Denmark will thus continue to be one of the few countries that live up to the UN’s goal of giving at least 0.7 percent.
– Denmark must continue to be in the absolute super league and spend at least 0.7 percent of GNI on development aid. I am proud that we are a broad majority in the Folketing who have given a handshake, says Minister for Development Aid Flemming Møller Mortensen (S) in a written comment.
How much Denmark will actually spend on development aid is unknown. The implementation takes place in connection with the Finance Act. This year, Denmark spends more than DKK 17 billion on development cooperation.
– We strengthen our efforts for climate, nature and the environment, so that it historically fills much of Denmark’s strategy. We are global leaders when it comes to solutions for green change and climate adaptation. It obliges. We must especially increase our efforts in climate adaptation for people in the poorest and most fragile countries, says Flemming Møller Mortensen.
This means, among other things, that Denmark will try to create more clean energy for people in the poorest countries.
In general, it is also the weakest and poorest countries that are mentioned in connection with the new strategy.
This applies, for example, to girls’ and women’s rights and assistance to the most vulnerable and marginalized groups.
– The strategy also focuses on creating hope. We want to prevent displacement and deal with the pressures of irregular migration, and we can do this, among other things, by fighting poverty and inequality. We want to help more people better in the immediate areas of crisis and conflict, says Flemming Møller Mortensen.
