prime minister Sanna Marin (SDP) has repaid more than 10,000 euros to the Finnish state for the food benefits he and his family members received last year, says Uutissuomalainen.
The prime minister found himself at the center of a controversy – which became known as the “breakfastgate” – over last spring’s meal benefit after a tabloid newspaper reported that taxpayers had paid for the breakfasts and cold meals that Marin and his family ate.
The Finnish police launched a short preliminary investigation into the matter, which involved the consumption of more than 14,000 euros between January 2020 and May 2021. The controversy also caused the country’s president Sauli Niinistö to say that it was good that the matter was investigated.
Police at the time stressed that the prime minister was not suspected of the crime, but said the investigation was investigating the actions of officials.
The news Finn said on Tuesday that Marin had repaid EUR 10,143.41 for 2020 and that this year’s share – just over EUR 4,200 – will be repaid at the end of this month. The total amount, EUR 14363.20, includes VAT according to the point of sale.
Marin promised to pay the money back at the end of May.
