The opening ceremony of the Reykjavík Pride festival was held today at noon in Ingólfsstræti. The city parade has been canceled again for the second year in a row due to COVID restrictions. Nevertheless, Ragnar Veigar Guðmundsson’s board member says there will be many events this year with something for everyone.
“The week will be full of diversity wherever there is a place for it” Ragnar Veigar said in the morning radio interview. “Obviously the festival is a bit different than usual, but we know how to do it to stay within the constraints of the epidemic.”
The festival program has everything from educational events that will be broadcast online to drag quinn performances and drag brunch performances at the Gamla Bíó Theater. “For example, this afternoon at the Mál og menning bookstore there is a very interesting educational event, an intergenerational conversation. Three people of different ages from the LGBT community tell about their experiences when they are around 20 “ Says Ragnar Veigar.
Preparations for this year’s parade were in full swing as COVID restrictions were reintroduced on July 24. Ragnar Veigar says some form of celebration is planned in the city center on Saturday. She emphasizes that everyone is welcome, whether they belong to the LGBT community or not.
