Birthe Neumann shines in the role of Karen Blixen in Bille August’s new film, “The Covenant”. This is the opinion of agreed critics from, among others, Berlingske and the film magazine Ekko.
At BT and Ekko, the film gets six out of six stars, while Berlingske has given five stars, and Ekstra Bladet four.
The film is based on the poet Thorkild Bjørnvig’s story of a platonic love affair with Karen Blixen.
She has moved back to Denmark after her African adventure. She has lost the love of her life and her farm, and her body is badly plagued by syphilis.
Blixen is, however, recognized for her art, and therefore Thorkild Bjørnvig and Karen Blixen enter into a pact that she takes him under her wings.
She promises she will make him a great artist. In return, he must obey her unconditionally.
Simon Bennebjerg, who plays Bjørnvig, is cast perfectly, thinks BT And Birthe Neumann is “brilliant”.
Several other reviewers agree.
– Is Birthe Neumann as good as Blixen? No. She is matchless. Absolutely fantastic, in fact, Berlingske writes.
Filmmaker Bille August also gets nice words from the reviewers.
– For Bille August, this film is a triumph. It is as if the whole career here is gathering, writes the film magazine Ekko.
