Registered unemployment rate amounted to 6.1% in July. and has fallen significantly since June when it was 7.4 percent. According to the Labor Office, 12,537 people were unemployed at the end of July: 6,562 men and 5,975 women.
The number of unemployed men has fallen by 966 since the end of June and the number of unemployed women by 813. Of the 1,779 people whose number fell on the register in July, around 700 were employed with a special employer allowance.
Unemployment was 9.1 percent. in May, 10.4 percent. in April, 11.0 percent in March and 11.4 percent. in February 2021. Unemployment was highest in the Suðurnes region in July (10.9%) and in June it was 13.7%. The second largest unemployment rate is 6.7%. and was recorded in the capital district, falling from 7.9 percent.
We read in a new Labor Office report on the labor market that the institution predicts that unemployment will continue to decline in August, thanks in part to special government efforts and increased market activity, to 5.3 percent. up to 5.7 percent
Large increase in the number of long-term unemployed between years
A total of 5361 jobseekers were unemployed for more than twelve months at the end of July, 457 less than in June. At the end of July 2020, there were 2,854 of them. It can be assumed that in the coming months the number of people unemployed for more than 12 months will decrease.
At the end of July, 4,932 foreigners were unemployed, which means a decrease by 772 since June. The number of unemployed fell in all industries in July this year compared to the previous month, most in industries related to tourism, i.e. between 22 and 25 percent.
The number of the unemployed in cultural activities also dropped significantly, by 14% between months. In the remaining industries, this decline amounted to 6 to 15 percent. In trade and construction, the number of unemployed people decreased by almost 10% since June.
