The now 23-year-old woman, who is a distant relative of Naser Khader (K), is accused of having stayed in Syria with Islamic State from 2016 to 2019.
She denies guilt.
In addition, she is accused of encouraging another person to travel to Syria and of promoting the organization’s activities in her presence, the indictment states.
The woman was charged back in 2017. Here she was in custody in absentia at a court hearing in the Court in Glostrup. So she was not present herself. According to the prosecution, she was still in Syria at the time.
The woman was arrested on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 5.15 pm at Copenhagen Airport, when she traveled into Denmark from Turkey, where she had also been arrested.
Since her arrest, she has been in custody.
At a constitutional hearing the day after the arrest at the airport, the woman pleaded not guilty.
– It is denied, said the woman’s then defender, lawyer Martin Andersen, to TV2 about the charges.
The prosecution has filed a claim for imprisonment.
The case is running as a jury trial, which means the prosecution is demanding at least four years in prison.
In similar cases, between three and six years’ imprisonment has previously been given.
There is no claim for deprivation of the 23-year-old woman’s Danish citizenship, as the defendant only has Danish citizenship, Copenhagen West Region Police informs.
It is only possible to be deprived of citizenship if a person has more than one.
It has been reported before that the woman should have tried to help her little sister to Syria. But it does not appear from the indictment whether it is the sister that the accused must have tried to encourage to travel to Syria.
In 2019, the sister, along with three others, was sentenced to three years in prison for trying in vain to travel to Syria.
The Conservatives’ Naser Khader even told of the relationship back in July 2020, when the woman was arrested.
– Yes, it is my half-grandniece who has been arrested, Khader wrote at the time on his Facebook profile.
Khader has previously said he has not met the two sisters since they were very young girls.
