He added that raising the quota is that resettling people from refugee camps through the refugee quota system is the most effective way to help people fleeing Afghanistan.
“There’s a risk that people will start moving if they can leave,” he told the broadcaster.
Ohisalo discussed the acute situation and other immigration issues earlier this week with colleagues from elsewhere in the European Union. “It is clear that Europe sees these people on the move, and then all EU Member States must be ready,” he stressed.
He estimates that the bloc is more prepared to receive a large number of refugees than during the refugee crisis in 2015-2016. Its aim today is to take action earlier, anticipate developments and provide assistance on the ground as well.
“We have to support the people there as much as possible, but also have a responsibility if people want to come here,” Ohisalo said.
