Although a controversial ban on tummy tuck – also known as croptops – has become a thing of the past at Firehøjeskolen in Vejle, the discussion continues.
On Monday, the demonstration “Croptops in solidarity with Fire High School” is arranged, which is scheduled to take place around the country.
Here, students will demonstrate by wearing blouses.
On Sunday night, about 6,000 people indicated on the Facebook event that they were either participating or “interested” in participating in the action.
This is despite the fact that Firehøjeskolen in Vejle has already withdrawn the ban.
A decision taken by the school board after the ban received massive criticism in the public debate.
But the fight is not over, says Edith Vels, who is co-organizer of the demonstration and goes daily in 2.g. at Aarhus Cathedral School.
She is leading the demonstration with friends from her high school class.
For the demonstration, she is expecting participants from Aarhus Cathedral School, Aalborg Cathedral School, Rosborg Gymnasium and Rybners Gymnasium, among others.
The students believe that there is too much focus on the female body in today’s society, and therefore the demonstration is not just about the one ban that has now been withdrawn.
– It is just as much about a sexualisation that takes place in the school system and to a particularly high degree of women’s bodies, and a downgrading of boys as being some boundless beings who cannot act considerately.
– We think to a large extent, it is an expression of something that adults have inflicted on young people, she says.
Such bans do not belong in schools at all, says Edith Vels.
– The school must be a place where you learn something and you are trained to become a democratic citizen in our society.
– I personally think it is the parents’ task to raise their own children and tell them what is smart to dress in. It is simply not the school’s task, she says.
She also says that another event, which also aims to combat the belly blouse ban, will take place on 1 September in Copenhagen.
