The Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has set up an expert group to study the Long Covid phenomenon.
Minister at a press conference on Wednesday Krista Kiuru (SDP) said about ten percent of people with Covid disease are likely to suffer from symptoms for an extended period of time, defined as symptoms that last for more than 12 weeks.
"Long Covid puts a strain on health services and is a global threat," Kiuru said and added that the working group is expected to have a direct impact on Finnish health policy.
The group will collect data until the end of 2022 to assess the long-term effects of Covid and to determine if it is a risk factor for other diseases.
"The information is available fairly quickly, but the rationale is justified [for that] takes time. I expect the group to make political recommendations on what we should do."
The group should be led Risto O. Roine, Professor of Neurology at the University of Turku, and includes a further 14 experts from universities and public and private healthcare providers.
Roine said Tuesday that Long Covid may be associated with more than 50 symptoms, but the most common are fatigue, headaches and difficulty concentrating.
