The figures for THL Covid infections vary due to technical problems

THL said on Sunday that 910 new Covid infections have been diagnosed in Finland. yesterday, THL’s communications department said a small number of infections, 87, reported on Saturday were incorrect.

However, THL’s communications department told STT that the small number of reported infections was incorrect. It said the technical issue is likely to be fixed with the Sunday infection update.

It would have been the lowest daily figure since mid-June and well below the average of 500-700 per day in recent weeks.

Together, these two figures give a daily average of just under 500, just below the September average.

Similar anomalies occurred on weekends in June and August. On the first Saturday in August, THL also reported an unlikely low infection, but corrected the entire weekend count on Monday.

The change in death tolls and hospitalization rates is small

The weekend figures will raise a total of 130,102 cases from the end of January 2020.

In a tweet on Saturday, THL stated that its technical support staff has only worked on weekdays since June, when reporting errors will be corrected.

THL also reports only deaths and hospitalization data on weekdays.

On Friday, it announced one new death, a total of 1,031 since the end of March.

The institute also said that the hospital had 91 patients nationwide, including 21 in intensive care units. Since the peak at the end of March 2021, these figures have not changed significantly during the summer, except for a slight increase at the beginning of last month.

HBL: 14 Mu variant cases

On Fridays daily Hufvudstadsbladet reports that so far 14 coronavirus Mu variants have been confirmed in Finland based on THL data.

The Mu or B.1.621 variant was first identified last January in Colombia, where it now accounts for 39% of all cases. It was classified by the World Health Organization earlier this week "interesting variant" due to properties that may make it vaccine resistant.

According to THL, almost all Covid infections in Finland are currently a highly contagious Delta variant.
