Boss HUS: Finland must have the courage to apply the brakes built into the coronavirus strategy in time

On Monday, the Finnish government announced its new coronavirus strategy and describes it as an attempt to reopen and keep open sectors of society open. The strategy outlines that restrictions should be lifted when at least 80% of those over 12 years of age have been fully vaccinated or have had access to both doses of the vaccine.

The strategy also shifts the focus of epidemic management to the national, local and regional levels.

On Tuesday, Mäkijärvi told the broadcaster that the time limit for removing the restrictions seems feasible. He also added that the government is ready to reconsider its position if necessary.

“We also have an emergency braking mechanism that we must dare to use when needed,” he stressed.

The mechanism allows authorities to impose restrictions in the event that the epidemiological situation deteriorates, for example as a result of the emergence of a vaccine-resistant coronavirus variant. However, the government outlined in its strategy that the threshold for recourse to the mechanism should be high.

Mäkijärvi estimates that the mechanism should be utilized based on the number of patients in need of hospital treatment.

“I think the limit should be drawn as the number of serious cases increases, which means an increase in the number of hospital patients. Before we see an increase in cases of intensive care, ”he noted.

The strategy also provides guidance to hospital districts for testing and tracking. The details of the instructions have not yet been clarified, but an agreement is expected soon Liisa-Maria Voipio-Pulkki, Director of Strategic Affairs, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

“We’ve already negotiated this with hospital districts, and I don’t think it will be long before we have new testing and tracking recommendations,” he said. “I’d say it takes a couple of weeks.”

Mäkijärvi also reminded that the epidemiological situation develops on the basis of human behavior.

“You should still wear masks in certain circumstances, you should still favor telecommuting in certain circumstances and avoid contact if you have symptoms, and try it in certain circumstances,” he said.
