Geneva hosts UN Permanent Representatives meeting on Afghanistan on Monday to address Afghanistan’s growing humanitarian needs, Sputnik reports
“We will certainly present a proposal for an increase in the budget, at least a temporary proposal for an increase in the budget, next Monday when we meet at the UN Conference on Afghanistan, the Humanitarian Conference on Afghanistan on Monday,” Maurer said.
About 100 international and 1,700 local Red Cross workers are in 11 full-fledged offices in Afghanistan. The one-year budget is currently $ 90 million, the ICRC chairman said.
“We believe that humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC will receive sufficient funding to expand their operations in Afghanistan,” Maurer added.
The ICRC has been operating in Afghanistan for more than 30 years and retains its personnel in the country, although many countries and international groups began evacuating after the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan last month. The ICRC will not change its ground operations and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to all parties to the conflict, Sputnik reports.
