HKL has reportedly justified the change on the grounds that it will help its ongoing process dispute With Siemens and to support the expansion of the infrastructure without affecting the staff in any way.
However, the drivers’ association has expressed concern about the fate of the employees when HKL becomes a public limited company, arguing that the proposal has been amended and no longer recalls what was negotiated between representatives of both parties in the spring of the year.
The union said in a statement that drivers decided to strike after their proposalโs requirements for an objective study were rejected. Metro and tram connections stop on Thursday morning (September 16) and continue on Saturday morning (September 18).
The Helsinki Region Transport Agency (HSL) does not provide additional bus or train services during the strike, and recommends that people who usually travel by tram or metro travel as much as possible by bike or motorhome during this time. The Helsinki City Council will make the final decision on the establishment of HKL on 22 September.
