HELSINKI, September 14 (Xinhua) – The Finnish government said on Tuesday that it would take direct control of the shares in the Swedish steelmaker conglomerate SSAB to help the country achieve carbon neutrality in 2035.
Through the state investment company Solidium, the State of Finland is the third largest shareholder in SSAB, which plays as one of the world’s leading fossil-free steel producers.
Solidium has held approximately six percent of the shares and eight percent of the voting rights in SSAB.
The Finnish government will transfer ownership of the Prime Minister’s Office, a press release said.
Reducing emissions in industry plays an important role in achieving Finland’s targets for carbon neutrality.
SSAB’s steel plant in Raahe, northwestern Finland, was considered the largest source of industrial carbon dioxide emissions in the country. The plant’s annual carbon dioxide emissions were estimated at 4 million tonnes.
