โWhat the hell is going on,โ tennis player Clara Tauson wondered over the winnerโs microphone moments after winning the Luxembourg Open yesterday.
Not only did the 18-year-old emphasize her credentials by winning her second (and season) second WTA tournament, but she also confirmed her undoubtedness by swearing in conversation with the media.
Sports stars who like to curse
For most sports stars, audible cursing / cussing is an absolute no-no, but this year the Danes have painted the courts, lakes and velodromes blue with their ugly language.
Olympic sailing champion Anne-Marie Rindom exclaimed โFuck, itโs so coolโ after demanding gold, while pursuit cyclist Frederick Madsen was heard shouting โFuck themโ about the British team at the Tokyo Games just minutes after he had the Pole one of them on the field.
But itโs not really gang!
Still, there is something refreshing about it. It was not long ago that British sports stars were reminded to speak the Queenโs during BBC interviews, otherwise there would be a hell of a pay.
And in Denmark, words like โshitโ and โfuckโ do not really swear. When Rindom later apologized to the DR viewers for swearing, it was to say โFor hellโ, which in English translates relatively timidly to โfor hellโ.
Confetti shower
In Tausonโs case, her excitement was over the microphone after a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 defeat by Latviaโs Jelena Ostapenko because she was drowned in confetti, she revealed to TV2.
The victory moves the unseeded Dane, who by the way was the last player to beat US Open champion Emma Raducanu, up to number 52 in the world.
On the way to victory in Luxembourg, she sowed the third, fourth and fifth seeds, and it will certainly only be a matter of time before she herself becomes a potential scalp for aspiring players.
