As reported by mbl.is, a special event took place in Iceland on 5–11 September – Icehopp. Skydivers from 15 countries jumped 912 times from planes, landing at different locations.
“I have been skydiving since 1983 and I have never experienced my country like during this event. In total, 76 jumpers took part in the event and I have never seen people smile like that “ Says Snorri Hrafnkelsson, one of the champions of skydiving.
Participants flew on airplanes over Iceland’s main tourist attractions, then were able to jump out with a parachute and admire the tourist attractions from a perspective that most people never see.
“To land safely, people on the ground must clearly mark the landing area,” explains Snorri. “We used it for smoke torches and flashlights.”
For the entire duration of the event, except for one day, the weather was very good. “We started in Hella, where conditions were acceptable,” reports Snorri. “On Tuesday we were at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the plane wreck at Sólheimasandur, at Reynisfjara beach, in the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, in Skaftafell and west of the glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón. From there, we flew from Höfn over Vatnajökull glacier and landed at Sauðárflugvöllur airport. We also landed at Lake Víti, Lake Mývatn, Ásbyrgi canyon and Akureyri. ”
