Mors in Höfn in Hornafjörður

Mors made his home yesterday at the pier in Höfn in Hornafjörður. Fréttastofa received nice photos from Lilja Jóhannesdóttir showing the animal lying comfortably on the pier and does not seem to care about the attention that draws curious locals to him.

Only one walrus has been seen off the coast of Iceland on average every ten years over the past five decades.

Walruses were once permanently present in Iceland, but many centuries have passed. The reason they do not settle on Icelandic shores is the lack of ice and the temperature is too high. Walruses appear to be quite ice dependent.
