The first appearance of necrotizing fasciitis on Danish television, via the documentary ‘the code-eating bacteria’, created great awareness of a disease whose symptoms are often overlooked.
The documentary contained many examples where patients with the carnivorous disease, which is transmitted through a carnivorous bacterium, were rejected by doctors.
The disease can be fatal if left untreated.
The National Board of Health on the clock
But now DR reports that Søren Brostrøm, the head of the National Board of Health’s health authority, wants to cooperate with the regions to ensure that people with the disease are treated quickly.
He has therefore revised guidance procedures for emergency physicians throughout Denmark.
Removal and antibiotics
The symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis vary, but most patients experience severe pain in the affected area along with fever, chills, and vomiting.
The best way to treat it is to remove the infected tissue and put the patient on a course of antibiotics.
