The longest interruption in a volcanic eruption

The longest interruption in a volcanic eruption

Even though lava has not been drained from the crater for several days, the volcano at Fagradalsfjall is still active.

“It has not been announced that the eruption is over. There is still gas and heat coming from the crater, but not much has happened in the last ten days. All in all, relatively little is happening “ Elísabet Pálmadóttir, nature conservation specialist at the Meteorological Office, commented on the hiatus in the eruption.

It added that this was the longest hiatus in the eruption since it began in March.

“However, it is very clear on the webcams that it is still very hot there. Magma doesn’t reach the surface, but we just have to wait and see what happens in the next few days. We’ve seen such breaks before ” Says Elísabet.

The last time lava surfaced on the evening of September 18. So far, the longest interruption in the eruption lasted from 2 to 11 September.
