During the storm that raged yesterday in the north and west of the country, the rescuers set off for another hundred emergency calls. Many of them concerned people who drove the car on summer tires despite the bad weather warnings.
The orange weather alert was in effect until yesterday evening in Faxaflói, Breiðafjörður and the Westfjords.
“Rescuers received more than 120 weather-related summons, mostly in Northwest Iceland and the Westfjords” Says Davíð Már Bjarnason, Landsbjörg’s information officer.
Most of these calls were for the entrapment of vehicles. David says nothing is known about the accidents and there is not much material damage. However, many people, despite the warnings, made the journey.
“We also received several reports from drivers who got into trouble on the mountain roads around Kjalvegur and Fjallabaksleið” Says Davíð.
We can boldly say that “winter surprised drivers”. Many cars still run on summer tires.
