A short but sharp earthquake of magnitude 3.7 was felt very clearly in the southwest area of the country and in Borgarnes just before two in the morning. About 700 earthquakes have been detected in the last 24 hours.
According to Bjarki Kaldalón Friis, a nature conservation specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Institute, the source of the earthquake is between Keilir and Litli Hrútur on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Seismic activity continues in the area between Keilir and Litli Hrútur, continuing the series of quakes that began on Monday. About seven hundred earthquakes had been detected in the last 24 hours, and about 200 since midnight last night, according to Bjarki.
Yesterday morning at eleven o’clock the earthquake with magnitude 3.5 and smaller quakes with a strength of about three degrees were measured. Earthquakes occur at a depth of six to seven kilometers, but there are no definite signs of an impending eruption.
The site is closely monitored by webcams and satellite images are expected tonight, which will be investigated in more detail tomorrow.
