The market for used cars is hot, and therefore it pays to have ice in your stomach if you as a private person want to sell.
It is backed by Ilyas Dogru, who is a consumer economist at the car owners’ organization, FDM. For the supply is small and the demand is great.
However, he emphasizes that the extra gain largely depends on how much energy one intends to spend on the sale.
– It is a really difficult exercise to price a car. But if you have time, then it is well spent checking out Bilbasen or the dealers. See what similar cars cost, he recommends.
And in fact, there is something to pick up for most people. According to Jan Lang, the demand is so great that even the cheaper and less sought-after brands sell.
His assessment is that models all the way down to 30,000 kroner sell much faster than usual. Therefore, one should not park the dream of a financial gain, even if one has a smaller model.
The same applies if one is in doubt as to whether there is still interest in petrol cars. Because while electric and hybrid cars have come into vogue, the used car market is still largely driven by petrol, explains Jan Lang from Bilbasen.
– Plug-in hybrids and electric cars are still so new that most have not been sold used at all yet, he says.
Despite the busy market, Ilyas Dogru from FDM does not think that you should expect to get the same price for your old car as the used car dealers take in the store.
– They have spent time getting it ready and use space to have it standing, so often you probably have to deduct a few thousand, he explains.
According to the consumer economist, one option is also to offer his old car to the dealer as part of a barter deal. The car dealers are also more interested than usual in the used models.
– It may be that the dealers will not pay quite as much, but in return you may get a discount on your new car, says Ilyas Dogru.
Here you can again gain something by checking with a number of retailers and use some of the online tools that make it possible to offer to several at the same time. That way you get a better idea of what the car is really worth.
– If you do not succeed in selling the car in the first instance, only the time is lost, says Jan Lang.
The car base estimates that the trend will at least continue throughout the year.
