The sixth farm, Nípá í Útkinn, was evacuated to Þingeyjarsveit due to heavy rainfall and landslides. The evacuation was announced by the police in Northeast Iceland in the afternoon, but the situation will be reassessed by noon tomorrow. There is still uncertainty in the case of the Tröllaskaga and there is a lot of water on the mountain slopes.
Farmers were helped by rescue teams to reach and milk the cows as many farms are unavailable.
Yesterday evening around 70 rescuers were working in Ólafsfjörður, where 18 houses were flooded with water and the damage was significant. In addition, large swamps have formed in many parts of the city and are now being drained.
“I have nothing to go home for. The whole plain is under water and the mountain has largely collapsed “ Says Hlöðver Hlöðversson, a farmer from Björgar in Útkinn. The family had to be evacuated by helicopter as they got trapped between the landslides.
A guard plane that flew along the Kinnarfjöll Mountains today found that much of the slope had disappeared, washed away by landslides during the night. Thirty people had to leave their homes. Among them was Jóna Björg Hlöðversdóttir and her family.
“We left the house and arrived in Húsavík around three in the morning. Landslides cut the road yesterday afternoon and then closed it completely in the evening. It ended up that Civil Defense decided to evacuate the area and sent a helicopter for us, because it was really the only way to get us from there “ Says Jóna.
“The whole plain is under water and the mountain has largely collapsed” – adds Hlöðver, father of Jóna Björg. “This is the first time in my life that has happened. I haven’t seen anything like it in almost 70 years. ‘
“Since yesterday evening, it has been raining all night and all day as if it was pouring from a bucket. Rivers and streams rose like never before “ – adds Jóna.
