If you have to vote by mail elsewhere than at Borgerservice – for example at the hospital, if you are hospitalized – you must wait until three weeks before the election.
Around the world, we have seen elections affected by the corona pandemic. Among other things, there has been an increase in postal votes in several places, which some believe is due to the pandemic.
Local government researcher Roger Buch from the Danish School of Media and Journalism does not believe that we will see a large increase in the number of postal votes in local and regional elections.
He points out that the Danes over the past 20 years have already become really happy to vote by mail.
In the most recent local elections in 2017, 5.7 percent of the valid votes were postal votes. Eight years before, it was 3.4 percent. This is shown by figures from Statistics Denmark.
Therefore, Roger Buch believes that the big increase has already happened.
– This is without a doubt due to the fact that it has become more difficult to vote on election day itself, he adds.
Roger Buch believes that the main reason for the increase is the closure of polling stations. We have gone from about 2,000 polling stations to less than 1,400 since 2000, he says.
According to Roger Buch, another reason is that municipalities are doing a lot to make citizens aware that they can vote by mail.
However, he believes that in many ways it is contradictory because polling stations are typically shut down to save money, but postal votes are much more expensive.
Whether you want to vote by mail or turn up at a polling station on November 16, do not expect the election to look very different than usual, despite the corona.
The Ministry of the Interior and Housing states in a written reply to the Ritzau that the Ministry has not at present decided to introduce special measures.
– But the ministry is following the situation closely and is in dialogue with the municipalities, KL, the Ministry of Health and the Elderly and the National Board of Health about the need for changed guidelines, it reads.
