Yrjö Reenilä, the special prosecutor assigned to the case told the newspaper that the decision not to file a complaint came as a surprise.
“The main argument of the defense was that it was not an intentional murder. Two [defendants] admitted guilty of aggravated assault and aggravated negligent murder and assault of one, ”he recalled.
The Helsinki District Court showed some leniency in sentencing the perpetrators to eight years and two months to 10 years and one month in prison, citing the young age of the offenders and the relative lack of prevention as mitigating factors. The prosecutor demanded that all defendants be sentenced to at least nine years in prison.
Reenilä told Helsingin Sanomat that prosecutors could have considered appealing the sanctions in their cross-appeal, which was to be defended as a result of the appeal.
