Car sharing is now available to residents of Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Akureyri. In recent years, such a service has appeared in thirteen places.
In Hafnarfjörður, the car park will be on the corner of Fjarðargata and Linnetsstígur streets, and in Garðabær on Garðatorg. Car sharing will be available in Akureyri in the next few days.
The service is provided in such a way that people who subscribe and install the application can order a car and pay for the time it is used. “Car sharing” is a joint project of the Zipcar car rental company, the Efla engineering company and the city authorities, supported by a grant from the research fund of the Road Administration.
In recent years, thirteen such cars have been made available in Reykjavík, and one in Kópavogur. Gísli Þór Guðmundsson, project manager at Zipcar, says car sharing has been well received. “Most people use it for short city trips” Says Gísli Þór. When asked how cars are kept clean, he replies that they are cleaned every two to three days, depending on how often they have been used. Gasoline cars have fuel cards that you can use to refuel them.
Car sharing is a six-month pilot project in Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Akureyri. During this time, Efla will be studying travel habits and people’s attitudes to these cars.
This type of service is available in many countries around the world. It can change the travel habits of people who do not want to own and maintain their own car.
