As reported by Morgunblaðið, the online delivery service Aha.is received the SA Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise award yesterday for the environmental initiative of the year. It is about drone deliveries that reduce traffic and air pollution. The offer is the result of a series of experiments by Maron Kristófersson and Helgi Már Þórðarson, founders of Aha.is. The company first offered a drone delivery in 2018 and, among other things, delivers orders from restaurants.
Environmental issues have long been at the fore for the company – all their cars are electric and in the field of drone supplies they are quite advanced on a global scale. The company works with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Boeing and other entities to create models of drone flights in Europe.
The latest drones owned by the company are completely autonomous and can choose the shortest and safest route to the customer. People living within a certain radius of the company’s headquarters in the capital can now order a drone delivery. Work is underway to reach more homes. For example, you can order a meal from a restaurant and have it delivered.
At the point of delivery, the order is dropped on a string and lands in the customer’s backyard. Should something go wrong, a parachute is triggered to ensure that the drone safely descends to the ground.
Drones fly at an altitude of 70 meters and deliver goods from a height of 25 meters. Drone deliveries not only reduce environmental pollution but also save time. And the ordered meal will not get cold.
Since the drones are not yet rainproof certified, they will not fly in the event of a rainy weather. That’s why Aha.is still delivers 97 percent of its orders by car.
The drone delivery can be seen below.
