As reported by Morgunblaðið, the residents of Hlíð in Akureyri won the silver medal in the international cycling competition Road Worlds for Seniors, held in nursing homes. They participated in this competition for the fourth time.
The event is run by the Norwegian company Monitech and lasts four weeks. This year 240 teams from 11 countries of the world took part in it. The gold medal was won by residents of a nursing home in Bruyere Villages in Ottawa, Canada, who cycled a total of 14,271 kilometers. The people of Hlíð came in second with 11,945 kilometers.
Physiotherapist Ásta Þorsteinsdóttir is pleased with this year’s achievements of the senior team. He reveals that his teammates have improved since last year’s race, where they covered over 9,000 kilometers. “It was a great result and I am very proud of the team” – he comments.
“It’s great fun to see what the spirit of competition is in people and makes them drive more and more” – he adds.
She also wants to remind everyone of the benefits of exercise. “Cycling increases the body’s endurance and flexibility, reduces pain and stiffness, and is good for the cardiovascular system. It also improves digestion and sleep.
