It was her grandfather, Christian X, who was the first monarch to visit Greenland back in 1921. In connection with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of that event, the queen will be presented with both objects and images from that time.
However, the trip starts in the West Greenlandic city of Ilulissat, where she will be welcomed by the mayor of Avannaata Kommunia, Palle Jeremiassen, on Friday.
In the city, the queen will, among other things, visit the newly inaugurated Ilulissat Icefjord Center. The center helps to disseminate knowledge about the surrounding Arctic nature. It has been open to visitors since July.
Along the way, the trip also passes Knud Rasmussen’s birthplace in the city. He was on the fifth Thule expedition as expedition leader and polar explorer. This trip also took place in 1921.
The queen will pave the way for descendants of the participants from the expedition who still live and work in the area.
On Saturday, she has been invited to an official dinner in honor of herself in Nuuk. During the dinner, she and the chairman of the Greenlandic national government, Múte B. Egede, will give a speech, it appears from the Royal House’s program for the Greenland trip.
In the capital, the Queen will also participate in the episcopal wedding of the Diocese of Greenland’s new bishop, Paneeraq Siegstad Munk, in Hans Egede Church.
Finally, visits are made to the American defense area Thule Air Base and to Station Nord, which is a military station in northeastern Greenland.
The trip takes place from Friday this week to Tuesday next week.
