As a makeup artist for over 11 years, it is always a great satisfaction to change a person’s appearance and often even their vision.
To me, everyone is beautiful and everyone can also be transformed to look even more glamorous.
I guess that’s why we’re often referred to as the ‘glam squad’ – we literally change people to live.
Makeup artists are a very important part of any shot, and without us, the footage and the final image simply feel as if part of the jigsaw is missing. I love being able to show people how beautiful they are.
Magic behind the scenes
Have you ever wondered what or who is involved in creating the beautiful pictures you see on the front pages of some of your favorite magazines: the teamwork that goes into creating a beautiful bride’s pictures on a bride’s wedding day, or the efforts behind the scenery to create the shiny, glamorous, picture-perfect images on social media?
Producing such images requires a fusion of a team of extremely talented and professional people. Often these team members are overlooked, underestimated and forgotten once the images are released.
In this issue of All Things Beautiful, I will break down the team of professionals ‘behind the scenes’ who are responsible for getting the wow pictures we all love to look at.
CLIENTS
The client is in many ways the person who sets the tone for how the whole photography goes. It is super important that the customer is understood and that their needs and wishes in relation to their vision are met.
Therefore, as a client, it is important to have an idea of what you want to achieve from the admission.
On the flip side, it is an underlying principle that the team understands what the client is trying to achieve.
THE FASHION STYLIST
The role of the fashion stylist is to keep an eye on all the latest trends in fashion so that they are able to dress clients according to their needs. A good fashion stylist is in line with the client’s style and current image, and it is often here that they draw some direction and inspiration.
In one set of shots, the stylist conveys the fashion vision to the client in an easy-to-understand way – and also to the makeup artist, photographer, hairdresser and a creative director, if there is one.
The fashion stylist is responsible for ‘pulling’ the best clothes and accessories that stand out on the shoot. The most well-known stylists are very well connected with some of the major fashion brands, designers and stores from which they are able to borrow or rent the things needed for a successful session.
MAKEUP ARTIST

Makeup applied by a professional mua (makeup artist) is so important in a photoshoot. Mua is responsible for the visual transformation of the model or client.
Mua understands the skin color of the evening, how to hide blemishes and how to perform color correction, contouring and highlighting.
If customers are allowed to do their own makeup, photographers are often left with ghostly appearances and more editing work afterwards.
THE HAIRDRESSER / FRISYLIST
The hairdresser / hairdresser is an integral part of the team. This stylist will consult with and advise clients on what the best direction is to take their creation. All the great stylists are up to date on what the latest trends are.
Photoshoots tend to get the best out of their talents as they unleash a wave of creativity in their designs – both the cut and the vision.
THE PHOTOGRAPHER

The photographer on the set is the key player and often also the person who edits and retouches to create the amazing final images, as well as to manage the models and crew.
The photographer is responsible for taking clear, artistic and striking photos that must match what the customer wants.
Photographers on the set must make sure that there are correct settings in the background and lighting.
If a hair is misplaced, or a lipstick is soiled, or if a dress has been moved out of place and needs to be adjusted, you can trust the photographer to take prompt action.
