The Finnish authorities have granted provisional approval for an experimental COVID-19 vaccine for mink on fur farms. The approval is valid until the end of December, after which more information must be provided.
Mink bred from fur are particularly susceptible to the COVID-19 virus and can transmit the disease to humans. The Finnish Fur Producers’ Association developed the vaccine in collaboration with researchers from the University of Helsinki.
As the vaccine has not yet been tested in clinical trials, it cannot be distributed commercially and is used and monitored in accordance with the strict regulations of 1000 fur farms in Finland.

The ban on fishing will help increase the salmon population on the Teno River
The devastating decline in the salmon stock led to a total ban on salmon fishing on the Teno River in both countries earlier this year by the Finnish and Norwegian authorities.
The National Resource Institute reports that the ban has resulted in the spawning stock of salmon having doubled in two tributaries and tripled in one of them. However, according to the researchers, the number and species of salmon farmed are not yet at an optimal level.
In addition, although fishing restrictions appear to have had a positive impact on salmon spawning, they have had a detrimental effect on the local economy and livelihood.
