Here she participated as a guest speaker at a climate conference at the green think tank Observer Research Foundation at the fashionable Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi.
– I would like to emphasize that the richest countries in the world will have to deliver. And Denmark is ready to do that. We want to increase our assistance for climate development in the poorest countries, said Mette Frederiksen to the VIPs present.
In her speech, she emphasized that the government and the Folketing did not know how to achieve a reduction of 70 percent when the Climate Act was entered into. But that political ambition should guide development.
– It was difficult to say stop to oil extraction in 2050. Because it is to leave money in the ground, so to speak.
– But we hope that such difficult decisions can motivate others to do something more, said Mette Frederiksen.
For the event, part of the focus – not least among those present – was that the rich, Western world should make an extra effort in the climate fight to give countries like India time and space for economic development.
Mette Frederiksen basically agrees with this. She says in a subsequent interview that Denmark delivers – and must deliver – extra. Not least when it comes to financing and help with the green transition in the world.
And then the developing countries must be helped to ensure that their economic development is green-based, so that they do not end up with the same emissions that the West has had.
– But fundamentally, I understand well that many developing countries say that we must take into account that their starting point is different.
– And that they also have many other tasks. For example, there are many Indians who do not have access to running water or enough food. It is at least a slightly more important task for India to solve, says the Prime Minister.
In the beginning of November there is a climate summit – COP26 – in Glasgow. But precisely in view of the fact that the rich countries must provide extra and help others to green development, the Prime Minister believes that the G20 meeting shortly before COP26 is, if possible, even more important.
The G20 is a collection of the world’s largest economies.
– We must put pressure in several places and not least in concrete terms when it comes to financing green development in developing countries.
– So it’s about ensuring that the G20 meeting ends with the rich countries setting their ambitions and committing. Then we can reach our goal. But it stands and falls in high graph with the G20, the prime minister said.
