The Finnish Football Association is participating in a joint Nordic offer to host the European Women’s Football Championships in 2025.
Therefore, Finland will join forces with the football associations of Denmark, Norway and Sweden to earn the right to organize the tournament, and the football authorities of Iceland and the Faroe Islands will also receive support.
"The European Championship final offer together with the other Nordic countries is a key part of our goal to strengthen football as a sport for women and girls," Football Association Development Manager Heidi Pihlaja said in a press release.
"We have the same values and goals as the other Nordic countries, and this project is a natural demonstration of building sustainable growth and co-operation – and setting a trend for the whole of Europe."
President of the Danish Football Association Jesper Möller told Danish broadcaster DR and tabloid magazine Ekstra Bladet at a press conference on Friday that his association has now abandoned its original plan to run the tournament independently.
Applications must be submitted to UEFA, the governing body of European football, by August next year, and the call for tenders is expected in December 2022.
So far, only Poland has made a confirmed offer to UEFA.
The Nordic football associations have previously discussed submitting a joint bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, but Möller said these plans are now pending as the associations are waiting for more information on the application process.
Finnish national team, Helmarit (or Pearl Owls), have played in the European Championships three times before – in 2005, 2009 and 2013 – and will perform for the fourth time next summer when the tournament takes place in England.
