One of the team’s strikers, Jørn Sørensen, became known for elegant dribbling, speed and good passes.
On Sunday, October 17, he turns 85 years old.
This summer’s football sensation started with hitting one of the biggest football nations.
The opening match against Argentina ended 3-2. Jørn Sørensen came on the scoreboard in this match.
Jørn Sørensen was born in Tårs in Vendsyssel, but started his football career south of the Limfjord in Nibe.
Jørn Sørensen played in the 1950s in Nibe Boldklub, which was a great success in those years. Here he was, among other things, involved in getting the club up in the Jutland series.
The striker’s talent was seen in the capital, and he moved to Copenhagen Boldklub (KB) – which today is part of FC Copenhagen.
Here he quickly became a regular part of the team’s strong squad.
It was also in KB that he played when the upcoming silver team went to Rome.
After the success with the national team, Jørn Sørensen’s talent was also discovered outside Denmark’s borders.
He became a professional, what few Danish players were then.
Metz’s first stop was in France, where he played for three years from 1961.
Subsequently, he got two seasons in Scottish football. First for the club Greenock Morton from 1964-1965 and then Rangers from 1965 to 1966.
After his stay in Scotland, Jørn Sørensen came to Switzerland and the club Bellinzona in 1966 and then US Giubiasco, before returning to Bellinzona.
Jørn Sørensen played 31 matches for the A national team and scored 6 goals.
He made his debut in 1958 against Curaçao.
When he signed his contract with Metz, his national team career stopped as the DBU at the time did not allow professional footballers.
Jørn Sørensen played together with other dignitaries such as Henry From, Henning Enoksen and Harald Ingemann Nielsen (Guld-Harald).
