The early weekly weather forecast has a sunny sky, but starting on Wednesday, a strong low pressure range is likely to change the weather.
In most parts of Finland, schoolchildren enjoy a week’s break during their annual autumn holidays. In some areas, however, many dress for the winter weather.
The week is expected to be a real mixed bag, starting with mostly sunny skies all over the country, then rain, sleet and snow and at night from frost to frost even in the southern regions.
According to Yle Meteorologist Joonas Koskela, the best day for outdoor activities is the beginning of the week.
"According to our forecast, the most beautiful day will be Tuesday, when the sun will shine in much of the country, in the north it will be below zero and in the south it will be well below freezing." Koskela says.
Winter in Lapland, a snowy day further south
By mid-week, however, these bustling, sunny autumn days will provide snow, sleet, and strong winds as the weather becomes more and more variable.
"The low pressure area will remain in place above Finland and rain will come and go. The timing and exact locations are still uncertain, but it will largely rain during the rest of the week," Koskela explains.
In northern Lapland, snow accumulated over the weekend in many places by about 20 centimeters. In Kittilä, one weather observation station reported 48 centimeters of snow on the ground. More snow is coming in Lapland, another 20-30 centimeters, if the current forecast holds true.
"Not unheard of, but the current October forecasts have quite an unusual amount of snow," points out Joonas Koskela.
In the southern regions, rainfall – rain, sleet, or a combination of these – depends on the direction of the prevailing winds.
In contrast, the area from northern Ostrobothnia to eastern Finland is very likely to receive 10 centimeters of snow on Wednesday. There may be snow in the western part of the country on Wednesday nights.
However, the winter weather in these areas is not sustainable because warmer air pushes in and turns the snow into rain.
Slippery roads
Joonas Koskela describes the forecast for the week’s temperatures "interesting" in the southern parts of the country, the thermometer fluctuates between readings below zero at night and to +10 ° C during the day.
Motorists should be aware of the frosts that started at night at the beginning of the week in much of the country, causing slippery roads in the mornings.
In Lapland, the temperature drops again on Monday and stays below frost for the rest of the week. Depending on the wind and cloud cover, the night temperature in Lapland at the beginning of the year is about -10 to 15 degrees.
Vacationers who plan to enjoy the outdoors may want to schedule them early in the week or postpone them until next weekend when the wet windy weather starting on Wednesday is over.
