“It’s safe to say that Kjarval is back in fashion and the time has come,” says Jóhann Ágúst Hansen, Managing Director of Fold Gallery. At the beginning of the week, an online auction of “pearls of Icelandic art”, selected works of many famous national painters, ended there. – we read in today’s issue of the Morgunblaðið newspaper.
Among the works put up for auction were five paintings by Jóhannes Kjarval, including one of his oldest oil paintings, Kálfshamarsvík, which was probably painted between 1902-1904 when the artist was 17-19 years old. “It’s a historical picture”says Jóhann Ágúst. The painting by Hraungígur Kjarval was sold for 2.8 million, which is twice the price. Dancing in the Clouds sold for around 4 million, which is slightly above the estimated value.
