Monday’s coronavirus test results have once again brought a much larger number of people infected than expected.
The active virus was diagnosed in 80 people, more than half of whom were out of quarantine. Therefore, the chief epidemiologist believes that it may be necessary to reconsider the plans to ease the restrictions in the country.
About sixty percent of those diagnosed yesterday were not in quarantine. The incidence of infections is clearly increasing. A significant number of infections were also diagnosed over the weekend, when around seventy people were confirmed with COVID-19 every day.
Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason, says another virus attack is clearly in sight.
“It’s pretty clear that the virus has spread a lot and when it starts sneaking into the hospital that is cause for concern.”
The country’s meeting restrictions have recently been significantly relaxed and all national restrictions are set to be lifted in just over three weeks under the current plan.
However, Þórólfur believes that these plans are subject to change in the current situation, as all decisions and changes have to be adapted to the real situation.
“It is obvious that the final decision is made by the government and the minister. However, I think that if we are dealing with an increase in infections, and in the hospital, then these plans should be discussed again ” added.
He added, however, that he had not yet started to consider further actions and to submit new proposals to the minister – whether this would happen will be decided in the near future.
“The situation in the hospital should be clarified in the coming days. What will the patient care and treatment look like. We may not pay so much attention to those who are diagnosed. We know this doesn’t apply to the whole story. “
People ignore the symptoms
Þórólfur says the virus is spreading faster than he would like to see it, and is true for large groups in particular. It is especially true for those who ignore symptoms.
“The virus is widespread and it doesn’t have to be large gatherings for an infection to occur. We see people with symptoms disregard them, work, move, and thus expose many others to infection. This can be more difficult now that people are vaccinated and have mild symptoms; this makes them rest and undergo tests less often ” Þórólfur said, explaining how the virus spreads.
