Free release of cats will be banned in Akureyri from January 1, 2025.
This proposal was approved yesterday by the majority of the city council. Disputes have arisen over this, but no party majority or minority is active in the municipality as all parties work together in the city council.
Hildur Jana Gísladóttir, Samfylking representative, presented the following protocol on behalf of Sóley Björk Stefánsdóttir and Heimir Haraldsson:
We’re sorry about the city council’s decision to ban cats from walking freely outdoors. The municipality has done little or nothing to enforce the rules already in force, nor has it tried to change these rules in such a way that as many people as possible can be satisfied. It would be possible to take the step of prohibiting the outdoors during the night and during the breeding season of the birds. It is more important to look for solutions than to accept a ban.
