Her friends go on holiday, shop and bathe. But in Biskopsgården in Gothenburg, 15-year-old Fatma remains on her farm and can not even afford a tram ticket. This is the story of a Sweden where every fifth child lives at risk of poverty – and where the summer holidays can be the worst time of the year.
Young and poor is a documentary series in three parts by Ulrika Nandra. In the Gothenburg suburbs Biskopsgården and Backa, we meet some of the children who grow up with a low financial standard.
About child poverty in Sweden
Every fifth child in Sweden grows up in what is called a risk of poverty or relative poverty. This means that the family’s income is less than 60 percent of the median income in the country. Among children of parents born abroad, many of whom are in Backa and Biskopsgården, the figures are even higher.
