Turku authorities are preparing to publish an annual Christmas peace proclamation to the public after Covid broke the 700-year tradition in 2020.
This would mean that participants would be able to gather at the Old Market Square to watch the ceremony in a familiar way.
However, city officials said the plan could change if the Covid situation in the area continues.
"All security issues will be taken into account, but no special arrangements will be made so far," said Sari Haavisto, Public Relations Coordinator of the City of Turku.
In 2020, Turku’s Old Market Square was fenced to prevent the public from entering the area. The choir was also smaller than usual. However, according to tradition, Christmas peace was still proclaimed from the balcony of the Brinkkala house.
By Mika Akkanen, Christmas Peace Protocol Chief, last year’s declaration was not technically different from previous years. However, the mood paled in comparison.
"It felt cool without the audience. I really hope that this year the declaration of Christmas peace can return to normal," Akkanen said and added that this year’s declaration is his ninth.
"Time flies," Akkanen pointed out. "I feel like I’ve just started this job. I hope that the mayor will trust my abilities and that I will be able to continue in this position for years to come."
