The EU president said in a statement: “The European Union does not recognize the new regime imposed by violence, but we must prevent the country’s looming economic and social collapse. We must stand by the people of Afghanistan.”
He also highlighted humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. “That is why last month we announced a EUR 1 billion package of EUR 300 million in humanitarian aid. The European Union will continue to work with the countries in the region,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Russia, the United States, Japan, Canada, France and Britain have expressed no intention of recognizing the Taliban government.
The Taliban arrived in Kabul on August 15, when the U.S.-backed government resigned. Later in September, the gang announced the formation of a new interim government in Afghanistan.
The country is currently suffering from the deepening economic, humanitarian and security crisis following the Taliban coup. The international community, from governments to NGOs, has provided a wide range of assistance to the Afghan people.
