COVID: South African health minister is dissatisfied with international reaction to Omicron strain

“The action against the countries of South Africa is unfortunate and damaging to our economies. We are confident that the countries will follow science and review their decisions. The Omicron variant is already widespread in many parts of the world,” Phaahla said.

The minister added that the government sees South Africa’s travel bans as an “irresponsible and unnecessary” move.

Phaahla also said the health ministry was dissatisfied with the pace of vaccination in the country.

“We are disappointed with the use of vaccines and will continue to promote vaccination in our country for everyone,” the minister said.

Earlier in the day, South Korea, Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia announced they would suspend travel with South African countries. Over the past few days, several countries have also resorted to restrictions on the Omicron variant traveling with the region, which the World Health Organization has classified as one of the concerns.
