The Police Department of Southwest Finland announced on Friday that it had released one of the suspects in Kankaanpää who are believed to be members of a far-right terrorist cell.
Last Friday, the Satakunta District Court ordered five men aged 23-26 to be arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack. This was the first time that a far-right group had been charged in Finland.
One of the suspects was conditionally arrested and the court allowed police a week to gather additional information about the suspect before a possible extension of detention.
The director of the pre-trial investigation said that the higher threshold required to continue the detention of the person, based on the interrogations and other pre-trial material, had not yet been met. As a result, the suspect was released on Friday.
Gg subscription, but no travel ban
As the law enforcement authorities saw no probable reason to suspect him of committing the crime, the suspect was not banned from traveling.
However, the man is still suspected of terrorist offenses and his involvement in the case is still being investigated. Police say he is not in danger at the moment.
The suspect’s lawyer, Jarkko Liljeqvist, said his customers are pleased with the decision. The suspect is subject to a restraining order that prohibits him from speaking about the case.
Kankaanpää is a city of about 11,000 inhabitants in Satakunta, about 50 km from Pori inland.
