could Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s animated documentary ‘Flight ‘(‘ Flee ‘) rewrites Oscar’s story?
Towards 2022, the chances of Danish film for an unprecedented triple day by day grow.
Yesterday, for example, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner was nominated for the award for best animated feature film at the Golden Globes.
But for the Oscars, it will be eligible to compete in three categories: Best International Feature Film, Best Documentary and Best Animated Film.
It could even surpass ‘Parasite’
Should it be nominated in at least two of these categories, it will not be the first as the Romanian film ‘Collective’ was nominated for both Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary this year.
Since 2020, both cartoons and documentaries have been allowed in Best international feature film category.
It raises the possibility that ‘Escape’ will win a triumph – a triumph that would be up there with ‘Parasite’ winning the 2019 awards for best film and best foreign-language film (as it was called at the time).
Furthermore, with Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on board to give the English-speaking voices, its chances of gaining much greater exposure than its competitors have received a huge boost.
Good pedigree so far
So what are its chances? Well, according to Paddy Power, the favorite is to win even money Best animated feature.
According to Indiewire, it is among the frontrunners to get on the last five shortlists for best international feature film.
Another site, Gold Derby, prices ‘Escape’ as second best in Best Documentary.
Out of 27 awards for which it was nominated, it has won 18, including two European Film Awards last weekend for best documentary and animated film.
On the way to the Dolby Theater
It will find out on December 21 whether it has reached the final and on February 8 whether it is in the last five.
Meanwhile, its US release on December 3 will only increase its chances along with an English-language version that Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have reportedly signed up for.
March 27 will confirm any Rasmussen escapes from the Dolby Theater with three statuettes under his arm.
