The third reactor is expected to start generating electricity at about 30 percent capacity in January. During the six-month trial period, during which it will generate electricity with variable power, the reactor is scheduled to start generating electricity in June, which is about 14 percent of Finland’s electricity.
“This moment will be remembered forever as a testament to the determined work to launch our new plant unit. It is a sign of strong professionalism in the nuclear industry and a desire to implement Finland’s climate measures, ”comments Marjo Mustonen, TVO’s Director of Electricity Production.
On Monday, TVO drew attention to the historical nature of the event, emphasizing that more than four decades have passed since the start-up of the new reactor in Finland and 15 years in Europe.
The reactor was originally scheduled for completion in 2009, but the project has been stuck in delays and setbacks, sparking a dispute between plant operator and supplier Areva. In 2018, Areva agreed to resolve the dispute by paying approximately EUR 450 million for Olkiluoto’s cost overruns and delays.
