Head of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital Districts (HUS) Eero Hirvensalo, says Covid hospitals should be set up to treat patients with coronavirus.
Hirvensalo, who is responsible for planning the care of Covid patients in the HUS area, believes that separate Covid hospitals are needed both in the Helsinki metropolitan area and throughout the country.
However, he emphasized that he did not mean building new hospital buildings, but suggested separating the treatment of Covid patients from those in need of other hospital care.
According to the chief physician, the long-lasting pandemic has had too great an impact on the treatment of Covid patients and added that the status quo cannot continue for long.
"We have a new disease that will require additional resources for years to come, and this must be taken into account when planning health care activities," Hirvensalo said.
Hirvensalo believes that the establishment of Covid hospitals would be possible despite the scarce resources of healthcare. She is seeking collaboration with a number of parties, including private health care.
"In the current staffing situation, it will be challenging, but with multi-stakeholder involvement, adequate funding, training and willpower, I think we are very likely to succeed," Hirvensalo decided.
