Finland is known for one of the lowest birth rates in the world. However, the birth rate in 2021 has come as a surprise, showing that the birth rate increased by 7.1 per cent in January-November last year compared to the same period in 2020.
Although not all births in December have yet been tabulated, the national numerator said that at least 49,510 new babies were born in Finland in 2021.
During the pandemic, birth rates in prosperous countries have generally collapsed, making Finland’s major boom in 2021 an international anomaly. Births have declined around the world since the start of the pandemic.
The birth rate in Finland has been declining since 2011, although there was a slight increase during the first year of the pandemic. In 2020, 46,653 new children were born, which is 1.7 percent more than in 2019. In that year, the birth rate in Finland fell to its lowest level since the 1868 national famine.
