Ann Lindstrand, unit manager for vaccine programs at the World Health Organization, WHO, believes that omicrons create an exceptional situation in the pandemic because so many people are infected. This means that entire societies are affected globally at the same time.
Those who are infected with the omicron variant do not get clear symptoms in 40-85 percent of cases. According to Anders Nystedt, infection control doctor in the Norrbotten Region, this may be due both to the virus itself being milder but also to the fact that there is good immunity in the population thanks to the vaccines.
Also participating are Anna-Mia Ekström, professor of global infection epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet and expert in the global network, COVAX, which distributes vaccines to low-income countries. According to her, 70 percent of the world’s population can have access to doses one, two and three of the covid vaccine in February. But that it now depends on there being staff who can give the doses and that the cold chain for the vaccine works.
