Weapons have been delivered by Britain to Kiev in the midst of the conflict with Russia
Ukraine thanked Britain for a new supply of weapons on Tuesday. Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Petrenko said the supplies “will only be used for defense purposes”, to protect troops and civilians from “any act that could lead to escalation.”
Local media reported that the shipment contained shoulder-fired missile systems called NLAW. They are designed to destroy main tanks and other armored vehicles and were developed jointly by Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Ukraine has become increasingly dependent on Western military aid in recent years. In 2021, Kiev received 30 Javelin anti-tank missile systems from Washington.
The delivery took place as Western leaders and NATO officials continued to insist that Russia gather troops and military hardware with the possible intention of invading Ukraine. On the same day, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg again accused Moscow of carrying out an “unexplained and unjustified” build-up. Russia has repeatedly denied that it was planning to attack its neighbor.
Moscow held separate talks with the United States, NATO and the OSCE last week, in an effort to ease tensions and reassure that the US-led military bloc will not expand further east. Russia has consistently said it sees the deployment of Western troops along its borders as a threat.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with his US counterpart Antony Blinken in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday to discuss further steps towards downsizing.
