STOCKHOLM, January 28 (Xinhua) – An official in the Swedish Olympic delegation tested positive for covid-19 on arrival in Beijing, the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) said on Friday.
SOC’s sports and development manager Johan Flodin was isolated and then tested positive in a second test, says SOC’s CEO Peter Reinebo in a press release.
“Johan was isolated after the first preliminary result and was quarantined in a hotel after the confirmatory test last Friday. He is asymptomatic and we expect him to be able to return to his Olympic tasks when he has given two negative PCR tests within 24 hours” , in Reinebo.
However, there was no reason to believe that Flodin may have infected athletes or other officials, SOC’s press officer Lars Markusson told Xinhua.
“He flew alone from Gothenburg to Helsinki. Then he was nowhere near any other Swede on the flight from Helsinki to Beijing. He also wore a face mask,” Markusson explained.
Markusson said that 56 of the 216 Swedish athletes selected to compete in the Olympics in Beijing – Sweden’s largest Winter Olympic team in history – have arrived in China on Friday.
Last week, the Swedish cross-country skiing team was hit by covid-19 when Leo Johansson tested positive. The 22-year-old has since tested negative four times and was allowed to accompany his teammates.
“He is with us. We are currently sitting in the bus on the way to Kuyangshu Nordic Center and Biathlon Center”, says Jan Wall, medical director of the Swedish cross-country national team.
